Air New Zealand announced that its Economy Skynest lie-flat sleep pods will launch on the Auckland-New York route in mid-December 2026, with a price of AUD$495 for a four-hour period and two periods available on each flight. The airline described the new service as a way to give more passengers a chance to rest on one of its longest routes.

Passengers booked in Economy or Premium Economy may add the option to their ticket, paying the fee in addition to the regular fare. Those who choose the pod will still receive their standard seat entitlement, with the sleep pod offered as an extra upgrade.

Launch details and pricing

The inaugural service connects Auckland and New York, one of the carrier’s longest segments, providing a natural setting for a rest-focused product. The airline said the route was selected because the length of the flight creates a clear need for a dedicated sleeping space.

Each purchase includes a full-length mattress, fresh pillow, sheets, blanket, a privacy curtain and a “Nestcessities” kit containing an eye mask, earplugs, socks and Aotea skincare. The kit was designed to give travelers everything required for a comfortable nap without having to bring personal items.

Pod features and amenities

Six individual lie-flat pods are positioned in a bunk-style layout between the economy and premium sections on the carrier’s new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The configuration allows the pods to be accessed without disturbing nearby seats.

Ambient lighting shifts to support rest and wake cycles; each pod offers personal storage, USB-A and USB-C ports, a reading light, a crew-call button and an in-pod seatbelt. Dedicated air vents manage circulation, while a curtain ensures visual privacy for the occupant.

Industry response

Condé Nast Traveller listed the concept among its Bright Ideas in Travel for 2026, selecting it from more than 200 global submissions for helping democratise passenger comfort. The publication praised the pods for making high-quality sleep accessible to a broader audience.
